Fire Chief

AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR A Collaborative LEADER.

Minneapolis, MN

Fire Chief

A national search is underway to attract an exceptionally well-qualified candidate to serve as Fire Chief of the Minneapolis Fire Department (MFD). This is a significant opportunity to lead a full-service, all-hazards emergency services organization in one of the nation’s most engaged and evolving urban environments. Minneapolis presents both complexity and opportunity, requiring a leader capable of guiding a respected department within a dynamic public safety landscape.

The Minneapolis Fire Department protects life, property, and the environment through fire suppression, fire-based EMS, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, fire investigation, and community risk reduction. The Department operates from 19 fire stations with a 2026 budget of approximately $96 million and more than 440 sworn and civilian personnel responding to over 60,000 calls annually, including over 40,000 Fire/Rescue/EMS incidents. MFD also supports the City’s 24/7 Behavioral Crisis Response (BCR) program, an innovative alternative 911 response model for behavioral and mental health-related calls.

The Fire Chief is appointed by the Mayor and reports to the Chief Community Safety Officer. The Chief retains full operational command of the Department while providing executive leadership across all operational, administrative, fiscal, and policy functions. The selected candidate will build upon MFD’s legacy of professionalism while advancing accountability, workforce development, fiscal stewardship, and operational readiness.

The next Fire Chief must possess substantial command-level experience in a large, paid municipal fire department and demonstrated success operating within Unified Command and National Incident Management System (NIMS) environments. Experience working effectively within culturally diverse communities and guiding leadership within a unionized environment is essential.

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in fire science, fire administration, public administration, business administration, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive operational experience in a large municipal fire department, including at least five (5) years of upper-management or command-level supervisory experience, is required. Fire Chief Certification, EMT Certification, Hazardous Materials Certification, and a valid driver’s license are required. A master’s degree and advanced executive-level fire service training are highly desirable.

This at-will position offers competitive compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience, along with a comprehensive executive benefits package.

The position will remain open until a final selection is made. Candidates are encouraged to apply early for optimal consideration. The initial review will be on April 3, 2026. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, comprehensive résumé, and list of professional references to apply@publicsectorsearch.com.
