A national search is underway to attract an exceptionally qualified candidate to serve as Chief of Police for the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). The Chief will be expected to improve the police department’s internal policies, practices, and systems to address structural and institutional racism, bias, or other practices that divide the community and/or the workforce. LMPD operates under the leadership of the Chief of Police, who is appointed by the Mayor. With a 2022-2023 budget of $210 million LMPD has a sworn staff of 1,039, along with 319 civilian employees. An inherently inspirational leader who commands respect while maintaining approachability is strongly desired inside and outside the department, along with someone who will develop partnerships with the area’s twenty-four other law enforcement agencies, the US Department of Justice, the Office of Inspector General, the Civilian Review & Accountability Board, and local non-governmental agencies and non-profits.
The new Chief will possess at least ten years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including at least three years of experience in a command rank at a large municipal police department. Candidates must have a track record of working effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community. Experience should also include developing and implementing strategies that have led to comprehensive organizational reforms. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field is required. A master’s degree is preferred, as is executive-level training such as FBI National Executive Institute, FBI National Academy, Major City Chiefs PELI Program, Southern Police Institute, or PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police. The selected candidate must be a certified peace officer or have the ability to obtain certification as required by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council.
This at-will position has a competitive salary for the role and expectations. An excellent benefits package will augment salary. For optimal consideration, candidates are encouraged to apply by Friday, June 23, 2023, by submitting a comprehensive resume, compelling cover letter, and list of professional references via email to apply@publicsectorsearch.com. The brochure for the position can be viewed at https://publicsectorsearch.com/recruitments/louisville-ky/. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process in late June 2023.
