The George Washington University (GW), a prestigious private research institution located in the heart of Washington, D.C., invites applications for the position of Chief of Police. This nationally recruited role presents a rare opportunity for a proven law enforcement leader to advance campus safety at a globally recognized university.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Campus Safety, the Chief leads the George Washington University Police Department (GWPD), overseeing law enforcement, emergency preparedness, and public safety operations across GW’s Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, and Virginia Science and Technology campuses. The Chief plays a central role in community engagement, strategic planning, and fostering a culture of trust, accountability, and inclusion.
The ideal candidate will bring a progressive, collaborative leadership style; a track record of managing complex law enforcement environments; and a commitment to transparency, equity, and innovation. Strong candidates will possess at least a bachelor’s degree and 10 years of law enforcement experience (or a master’s and 8 years), including 5 years in a command role. Experience in higher education and advanced training (e.g., FBI National Academy) is preferred.
