A national search is underway to attract highly qualified candidates for an exciting opportunity to serve with the University of Pittsburgh Police Department (UPPD) as the next Deputy Chief of Police. The position will report directly to Chief Holly A. Lamb, who was appointed Chief in January 2024. 

The University of Pittsburgh Police Department (UPPD) is a full-service law enforcement agency providing 24-hour protection for nearly 40,000 students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The department is authorized for one hundred and twelve (112) commissioned officers, forty-five (45) security guards, ten (10) dispatchers and Communications Supervisors who work in one of six divisions, each led by a Commander or Civilian Manager, who reports to the Deputy Chief of Police. The Deputy Chief of Police will serve as a senior adviser and leader on all law enforcement matters and assume full responsibility for command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police. The next Deputy Chief will understand the unique challenges and opportunities within a university setting. They should have a proven history of managing and implementing change, demonstrating resilience, flexibility, and strategic thinking.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree and seven years of police experience, including three (3) years of supervisory experience in a unionized environment. A master’s degree and campus policing experience are preferred. Candidates must be certified or capable of being certified under PA Act 120 and have or be able to obtain a valid PA Driver’s license. The salary for the position will be competitive for the region, and starting salary will be commensurate with the selected candidates’ experience and education.
