A national search is underway to attract a highly qualified police executive to serve as the Chief of Police and lead the police department in Columbia, Missouri. Columbia is the county seat of Boone County, and Missouri’s fourth most populous and fastest growing city, with an estimated 128,555 residents in 2022. The Columbia Police Department has a budget of $31 million that supports a current authorized staff of 191 sworn and 57 professional staff, who work in the Office of the Chief of Police of one of three (3) bureaus managed by an Assistant Chief—the Chief is appointed by and reports directly to the City Manager. The successful candidate will have at least three years of management experience in law enforcement supplemented with substantive training and education in management and administration. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, police administration, or a related field is also required. The position will have a competitive salary that is augmented by excellent benefits. The proposed pay range is $122,482-$188,682. Starting salary will be based on qualifications and accomplishments.
