A national search is underway for the next Chief of Police at Sonoma State University (SSU) in Rohnert Park, CA. With more than 9,000 students and a beautiful 269-acre campus near Northern California’s magnificent wine country, SSU is part of the 23-campus California State University system and one of the state’s most desirable higher education institutions. The University is seeking a dynamic servant leader who recognizes the complexities and challenges of policing a campus environment, is deeply committed to community-oriented policing, and understands and values the distinct policing needs of a complex academic setting.

The Chief will lead a cohesive team of 16 sworn officers and professional staff and manage an annual budget of more than $2.6 million. The minimum qualifications for this opportunity include ten years of progressively responsible sworn law enforcement experience, with at least three years of management experience, and a Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Public or Business Management, Social Science or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may satisfy this requirement. Preferred qualifications include prior policing experience in a university or college environment, a Master’s degree and completion of an advanced executive program such as California Law Enforcement Command College, FBI National Academy, Naval Postgraduate School, or similar program. The salary range is $150,000 to $170,000, with placement dependent on qualifications and experience. Compensation will be augmented by a generous benefits package that includes Cal-PERS safety retirement, exceptional healthcare options, take-home vehicle, transitional housing, relocation assistance, and much more.
