Chief of Police

AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR A Collaborative LEADER.

Aurora, CO

Chief of Police

A search is underway to attract a highly qualified candidate to lead the Aurora Police Department (APD). Aurora is Colorado’s third-largest city, with a diverse population of more than 389,347. Like most major metropolitan cities across the country, Aurora experienced its share of protests and an increase in crime in the past two years. The next Chief must be equipped to manage the challenges and opportunities associated with a consent decree recently put in place on February 14, 2022. The next chief must also work to implement effective crime reduction strategies while balancing efforts to strengthen and build trust with Aurora’s different communities, including communities of color and those representing other marginalized groups. Aurora seeks a Chief of Police who is passionate about that mission and enthusiastic about this opportunity. The Aurora Police Department (APD) is authorized 744 officers and 237 professional staff employees. The ideal candidate will be forward-thinking, focused, and driven to ensure department policies and actions are consistent with the best policing practices appropriate in today’s world. The chief will always be transparent, valuing trust over any short-term gain in public perception or image. The chief will set the example for the command staff by being visible and engaging all segments of the community. The position requires at least ten (10) years of increasingly responsible command and supervisory experience in municipal law enforcement, including five (5) years of administrative responsibility. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a subject related to the position is required. A Master’s degree in public administration or a related field is highly desirable. Advanced training such as the FBI National Executive Institute, FBI National Academy, PELI Program, Southern Police Institute, or PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police is considered a plus. Must be a certified peace officer or have the ability to obtain certification as required by the state of Colorado Peace Officer Standards. The current top salary for this position is $286,000, with an expected hiring range between $192,000 and $250,000. The starting salary will be based on qualifications and is subject to negotiations. The city also provides an excellent array of benefits, including Retirement Savings & Pension, Medical, Dental, Vision, and Relocation Assistance. For optimal consideration, candidates are encouraged to apply by August 19, 2022, by submitting a comprehensive resume, compelling cover letter, and list of professional references via email to apply@publicsectorsearch.com. Public Sector Search & Consulting will conduct preliminary interviews. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process in September 2022. After a selection has been made, an offer will follow, contingent on successfully completing the remainder of the city hiring process. The selected candidate will join the City of Aurora in October 2022 or at a mutually agreeable date. This position will be considered open until a final selection is made.
