The University of Oklahoma (OU) is seeking a visionary leader to serve as its next Associate Vice President and Chief of Police. This is a unique opportunity to lead a community-focused, multi-campus police department that emphasizes service, safety, and inclusion.
With nearly 32,000 students, over 2,800 full-time faculty, and an annual budget exceeding $2 billion, OU offers 172 undergraduate, 156 master’s, 81 doctoral, and 54 certificate programs. The OU Police Department (OUPD) serves three campuses—Norman, Oklahoma City (Health Sciences Center), and Tulsa (Schusterman Center).
With a staff of 171, three Assistant Chiefs oversee day-to-day operations on each campus and report directly to the AVP and Chief. The department is known for its strong accreditation record, commitment to community policing, and proactive engagement. The next Chief will foster a student-centered safety culture and ensure coordinated emergency response and modern policing practices across campuses.
Reporting to university leadership, the Chief serves as OU’s top public safety official and key liaison for all campus safety matters. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, strategic leader with multi-site law enforcement experience, emergency preparedness expertise, and a deep understanding of contemporary campus policing. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field is required. The most competitive candidates will have 10 years of progressive experience in law enforcement, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
